Swimming Underwater... Q&A
« on: October 06, 2010, 02:03:36 pm »

Hi Guys, This is just a quick question cause I have no idea on how to do it myself. BUT what is the max distance an adventure at each of the main levels can swim underwater in an enclosed area (no immediate air) without drowning and will passing under a Gap give air or will they need to rise into it???

Mmm...not really sure. I guess it really all depends on the adventurers stats & skills from swimming to toughness & endurance.

So some test may vary...

I would love the help, cause I am going to be making a Fortress which contains an underwater Labyrinth where the player needs to scramble to each air pocket like a mad fool to reach the end so they can move onto the NEXT challenge. Even more 'Fun' would be the dead ends... Ke Ke ke...

I tested this quite much back in 40d. Can't remember the exact results, but they did span very wide, from like 5 tiles to 40 and more. It turned out to depend largely on toughness and speed.

No idea how this has changed in the new versions. It's probably endurance and speed now.

I believe it is based on how tough the individual is, and how fast they can move, yes, and as long as the tile imediatly above them is without water, then they can breath. automatically. However, heh... i have a race that are amphibious.

This is Dwarf Fortress! If we can chuck magma at innocent wildlife, we can do ANYTHING!

It was at this point that I realised that dwarves are actually the essence of chaos. What else can make perpetual motion machines, recursive statues with more building materials than the average tower and has such a short attention span that a damn fine chair can off-set the death of their entire family.
