Solved the Mystery (Drowning Dorfs)
« on: August 23, 2010, 09:10:33 am »

So for the past few years in this save my dwarves kept drowning randomly, it was starting to aggravate me as there is no wildlife in the murky pools, no ramps to walk into it, etc. so I just kinda ignored it and lost a dwarf or two each year to it and moved on.

Well I finally solved the mystery, apparently whenever the Ice thaws after winter my dwarves standing on top just plummet to their deaths and tread water till they drown because of the lack of ramps.

Quite hilarious, don't think its a bug but Fun nonetheless.

One can put the ice/water area as restricted traffic zone (d-o-r).
Lately I'm starting to build floors on top of outdoor ponds so no idiot soldier jump-dodges into the water and drowns.

I think I'm just going to toss a ramp on the sides of all the murky pools, I figure if they still manage to drown I should be happy their genes are out of the pool. No pun intended.

I've been doing ramps around the edges of all my ponds, it makes them look better as well as providing an exit. Wildlife sometimes likes to hang out in ponds with ramps though so be careful.

Well, happened to me too, but different - 5 years, no worries - no problem and the pools outside the front gate are great in summer, and ordinary ground in winter.

5 years no problems.  Now, this Spring, 3 dwarves, one of which an Elite Wrestler, all drown at the same time.  Why now? Why suddenly in the fifth year?

Still, except for the Wrestler, better off without them.  Got migrants too, which is good - none for the past two seasons, and I'd gone from 99 to 93 dwarves with goblins, forgotten beasts and now senseless downing...

But I will put ramps on them now....
