Bone crafts and totems. I wish I had something more exciting but that's what I did with mine.

My cage traps are placed strategically in the wild to capture animals for me zoo.
After getting a few mating pairs, I deconstruct them.

Cages also exist as a last-line trap defense in my front door, as well as last section of my Death Tunnel, which is left open to siegers when everything else is closed.

All traps are forbidden until I explicitly want to have them reloaded and the critter stockpiled.  This prevents Urist McHauler from getting himself killed.  Same goes for the stone traps.

Undead are usually a nuisance only in the wild traps, before I get the zoo going.

Simple solution: don't build cage traps, they're annoying.

I agree. cage traps are too labor-intensive to efficiently use, especially when defending from sieges. Better have them as a last-resort weapon behind multiple layers of defence or as novelty utilities used only for capturing interesting beasts, such as dragons.

I actually like cage-traps.
Even my current entrance looks like this:

And I'm far from being done with it.

I'm guessing you don't bother with a military.

Seriously though that is an absurdly protected fortress.

Absurdly defended? Where's the magma cannon? The dwarven land mines? The dwarven orbital bombardment cannon?

What? He's firing from the hip.

Things airdrown in cages? I thought cage-stasis extended to asphyxiation.

No in 40d they didn't.
By modding raws you could even tame fish.
Training war carp, tough, was far harder, as they had to be let out of the cage.

They were buggy as crap, tough. Fries were hostile to caravans and liaisons.

I have a 2x2 area of cage traps right in front of my main stairwell. Goblins don't get there as they are rerouted to halls with.. slightly more malevolent architecture. But megabeasts will find my entrance strangely unprotected and the gates wide open. Until they reach the stairs.
