How to find ponds/lakes/pools/etc.
« on: October 03, 2010, 05:45:40 pm »

So, I always embark on places with brooks, but flowing water causes lag and my game already runs slow enough. I think it would be better to embark on a place with lots of non-flowing pools of water, but they don't show up on the embark map. Does anyone have any tips on how to find such places?

Swamps have lots of pools.

But do they have aquifers? I don't want to have to deal with that stuff.

Pretty much every map i've ever embarked on has had pools, I'm in .12 though so it may have changed, If you don't mind a bit o engineering, you could breach an aquifer and use that.
Edit: I believe that swamps may not have aquifers, oddly enough.

I've found that swaths of 1s in the elevation map around brooks are usually just lots of ponds.  Aquifers are easy to mod out if you just don't want to deal with them; just delete a couple lines and you're golden.

Alright, it's swamp party time! Also, is there any word if dwarfs will be able to eat snow (drink) in future versions?

Swamps sometimes have aquifers, sometimes don't.  There isn't really any downside to swamps/wetlands that you don't see on any other type of terrain, except they tend to be very flat (actually that's a positive for many people).  They always have tons of trees and vegetation, and the pools tend to be pretty lively, with lots of turtles and fish.

Also, avoid hot climates, since the ponds dry up.
