Military in .12
« on: October 01, 2010, 09:40:25 am »

So I've finally managed to get weaponsmithing down, so for my first REAL fort, I'm starting to build my military. In 0.31.12 will my military slaughter itself if I have them practice with their steel battle axes with no armor? Or will they be safe since they're just sparring.

For the record I plan on making the barracks a danger room.

I have not actually seen a sparring match in DF2010. A couple demonstrations, and a whole lot of Individual Combat Training, but no sparring matches.

I think you are safe.

But build armor ASAP. I prefer an unarmed military in full plate to an armed military in nothing. Think about it this way: if you meet one dude with a bow he only has to hit each of your guys once to kill him.

If your steel industry is still young just make iron chain for all your dudes. It'll increase their survivability like a million percent.

Since I've posted I've made steel chainshirts for each of my axedwarfs.

It seems I've also pissed off the local elves. Hooray!

I've seen plenty of sparring matches in my first 0.31.12 fortress, even when it was just one squad containing 5 or 6 soldiers, so they definitely do happen. If you ever see a light blue "S" in the upper-left corner, then your dwarves are sparring properly.

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

I've had literally hundreds of pages of sparring match results. I haven't read all of them, but I also haven't seen any dwarves go to the hospital or the morgue afterward.

Someone reported a dwarf being beheaded by an axe during sparring, but I don't recall where.  Sparring injuries are extremely unlikely at worst.

I've used iron armour and iron swords on my dwarves and not noticed a single injury, looking through the combat reports I can see "Soldier xxxx is Sparring!" and the whole log is basically dodges and "Lightly taps (armour slot)" so I'm assuming dwarves no longer spar as if they were in a spartan arena. Maybe I should try it without armour.

My personal favorite:

"Urist McAxedwarf hacks at the Recruit's right eye with his *steel battle axe* lightly tapping the target!"

Yeah, I think they'll be fine without armor.

I've gotten my military to spar occasionally.

Unfortunately, they think it's a grand idea to pick up the sharp spears instead of the training ones.

And then they think it's a grand idea to manage to chop each other's toes off with iron axes.

Still, it shouldn't matter, but you should always have armor ready for them.

Yeah, it was me that had the axe incident
It was an masterwork cotton candy axe hit to the neck, so that may have been a contributing factor...

While I personally have never seen an injury while sparring, I do have a couple of dwarfs who are mysteriously missing fingers and toes. It doesn't seem to matter because nothing shows up on their health screen, and the body parts on their wound screen are all white.

you have to scroll down to see the rest of the wounds, stuff like internal wounds (spine, liver, lungs) and peripheral stuff (fingers, toes, etc) don't show up till you use + and - to go down
