So yeah, it's there in the title...
I'm already being OCD about carving fortifications first, but this is my first time, so anyone have advice?

Some things can pass through fortifications.  What I do is I wall the section off, leaving one miner down there with a small storeroom and a bed for him while I mine with the fortification trick.

I used to have an avatar, but I was told to remove it after it kept making people go insane.

What passes through fortifications?!?!?!! Other than magma, I mean. Also, if you don't have an engraver down there, doesn't it take forever?

Spirits for one?

I usually dig first layers of blue stuff until i accidentally puncture. Then build a wall. Or prepare a cave-in in advance to block the tunnel.

Engraved on the monitor is an exceptionally designed image of FPS in Dwarf Fortress and it's multicore support by Toady. Toady is raising the multicore. The artwork relates to the masterful multicore support by Toady for the Dwarf Fortress in midwinter of 2010. Toady is surrounded by dwarves. The dwarves are rejoicing.

And once you breach hell and immediately seal it with a cave-in, you reveal where the hollow parts are in all the other adamantine in the map?

When I find a chunk of blue stuff I'll dig all around it as deep as I can go with out digging any of it out. Once done I can usually estimate where any hollow areas would be as they are usually only 2x2 per level. So far I've been able to get plenty with out any risky digging.

Thing with fortifications and blocking it off afterwards is that it still rapes your fps.
