Humans = Pansies?
« on: October 03, 2010, 11:44:27 pm »

So in my latest fort i accidentally pissed off the humans. Then when they tried to make peace I killed their ambassador. By "accident". Their response was to send three squads of mounted knights to camp on the edge of my map for half a year and killing my FPS.
When they one squad tried to take the initiative they ran into Cog Likotabel. My trusty veteran war dog. My Veteran Three legged war dog. What did the humans do upon seeing him?

They ran away

In their defence he is armoured in so many pages of bloodstains that i cannot count them. And just behind him are rather large piles of goblin corpses, but are humans always this cowardly?

While your three-legged war doggie is no doubt fearsome, human siegers are of the more irritating variety that truly sieges your fort and disrupts trade and kills migrants, rather than just politely impaling themselves on your devious array of traps.  In other games, they are called "camping pricks".

I like to look at it with a historical perspective.  You aren't at war with the humans but you've pissed them off so they sent a little raiding party not to annihilate you but to give you a bloody nose and maybe try and score some loot/booty.

In game terms, though, complete pansies.

And this is why I'm a strong believer in overwhelming force.  I don't care if there is only twenty of you, I'm sending all 38 crossbow dwarves, 32 axedwarves, 30 macedwarves, 18 wrestlers and 67 war dogs after you, just because you're annoying me.

Humans do have their moments, but don't forget that it was a human who ultimately slew Oggez Rashas, the bane of Bronzemurder...

I like to think of the humans as the U.N.

Setting up trade embargo's and blockades. Rather then coming to slaughter you.

Game mechanics answer, aside all these amusing ones, would be that horses aren't known for their violent behavior, and the knights having those as steeds(I assume so, that is) learned the hard way that against anything that looks at them funny, especially a grim three-legged war dog, they turn tail and run. This behavior is most infuriating if the riders use crossbows.

You chase after them, horse runs away. All while the rider is shooting, most likely hanging from the saddle, or upside-down or some other tomfoolery that humans like to practice.

If your map is relatively flat, build a few ballistas like 2 screens from human camp. A few shots from each of them should make horses less movable. And um, they won't really notice being shot to death. They must be partying heavily.

AFAIK, horses will actively attack anything in the nearby square. However, they seem to shy away from dwarves. The reason is the [BENIGN] [MEANDERER] tag. Try adding [LIKES_FIGHTING] to make them hostile.

the only problem wiht having hostile horses is that immedeatly any horses your dwarves have may mass murder other dwarves while being considered a pet.
meaning migrant waves will immedeatly be massacred by the seventy pet horses they seem to always bring, and the horses will besiege your fort under the guise of 'pets'.
