I don't know if this has been suggested before, the forum search doesn't yield any relevant threads, but in-case it hasn't already I want to make sure this suggestion has due exposure:

It is painful and time-consuming sifting through large lists for a specific item, some example scenarios:

• Limiting a stockpile to a specific material type
• Choosing a specific material type for a construction
• Choosing dwarves for a squad

It would be a boon to be able to filter any list automatically by typing a word just like it is done choosing jobs in the job management section.  For example, I should be able to do the following if I want to build a wall of steel:

b + C + w + "ste ba" ("ste ba" would yield "steel bars" in the material list)

Came to suggest this and found this thread, so I'm bumping it.  If you've ever tried to create something out of a material that's hard to find in the construction list, this would be amazing.  I've spent obscene amounts of time trying to make sure that the ceiling is make of clear glass, for example, and it isn't always practical to keep those items very close at hand.  Simply being able to type the material you want is all I need.

Hell yeah!

Find-as-you-type is great functionality in manage menu and even better in bring items to depot screen.

Other places it would be usefull:

* Stocks screen (usefull for forbids/dumps/melts)
* Animals screen (usefull to see how many cows you have exactly)
