I've breached the first level of caverns... but it's nothing but acres of flat mud. No underground trees, shrubs or mushrooms. None. Just a lonely Mole Dog wandering disconsolately around, and a few patches of Giant Cave Spider webs.

Is this normal?

It's a bit surprising, but considering the stuff is randomly placed, not too unusual.

Explore the entire map's caves.  If you get through the second and third level with nothing, then that's something unusual.

From looking at the raws and such, it seems that this happens when the "Water" of the biome is really low.  It looks at the "chasm" biome instead of the "cave water" biome which only has blood thorns in it, and those only appear on level 3.  (I'm 90% certain, though I haven't tested it, that what the wiki says on those biome tags is wrong.)

Check the other cave layers, though, my current fort had nothing in the first layer, but everything was normal in the next two layers.

It's normal to have a blank one if you have three, happens to me all the time. The other two should have all the various types of subterranean trees/plants. in them.

It's perfectly normal - your cavern doesn't have enough water to uspport plantlife.

Cool... I just breached the second cavern level, and it has all the usual plants. I just barely managed to floor over the hole before the bat-men arrived... fortunate indeed, since I haven't yet even started assembling a military.
