Puzzle Quest 2
« on: September 27, 2010, 12:25:19 am »

I really loved the first game, so I decided to get the new one on Steam. I am having fun with it so far and I recommend it if you liked the first one. The rest of the Puzzle Quest games weren't as good in my opinion but this new one seems to be as fun as the first.

One problem I am having is I cannot figure out how to switch my equipped spells. I am still sitting with the same spells I started with even though I have learned new ones. I go into my spellbook and try to change them, left-click, right-click, click/drag, whatever and nothing works. Of course Google is no help and there is no help file or anything I know of.

To switch your spells, left click on the equiped one, left click on the one you want to replace it with.

I've been playing Puzzle quest 2 for a while now. I really miss being able to upgrade your city from PQ1.

Overall I think it is okay. It seems like they really favor sorcs. I have a weapon right now, at level 15, that is one handed and after a few upgrades takes 11 actions to do 15 points of damage. That is just silly! I can also turn any square into a +5 skull for pretty minimal mana (Hello 4 in a row!) and any gem into a wild card.

I guess it is worth 20 bucks, but I really feel like they cut corners just because they could. For instance, you can click to skip text on the screen, so it takes 5 or 6 seconds to turn in a quest because you get a pop up that says "Quest complete" followed by "Gold +40" followed by "Experience +100". There is also, clearly, the very bare minimum of animations done. What is cool, is that your games save to the steam cloud, so even if you format, you get to continue your quest.

Just don't get the space one from a couple years back.  It was awful.

the game is apparently easily modded and there is a mod community working on aspects such as difficulty and AI.

I like this game, the idea and concept are great; but the difficulty is horrendous.

Oh GOD where to start:
1. A Major, MAJOR part of this game is luck-based and horribly skewed against you at times. You'll see attacks getting blocked multiple times in a row and watch as the enemy kills you in a single move after just barely surviving your all-out-attack. You'll see an enemy making ridiculously stupid moves and getting 5+ combos for it. You'll see enemies making the first move and having great options while whenever you start, you get none. Every turn you make has a chance of fate giving you the finger and dropping so much crap on you from so high up you'd think God himself was crapping on you.

2. The enemy scales with you, so grinding is not only annoying but incredibly pointless.

3. The game punishes reading ahead: You see the game recommends a move that you see will cause those 5 Skulls+5 to be able to link together on the opponent's move. So you ignore it and make a different one. Then you see the enemy make that SAME move, get EXACTLY what they need to get an extra turn, return to problem #1.

4. The process of capturing high level mounts is horribly difficult, leveling them up even more so.

5. There is no re-spec option, so if you don't read into your class's skills (Which you probably won't), you won't know how to properly build your stats. Even then, focusing on one particular build makes some mini-games impossible, while NOT focusing them makes the rest of the game much more difficult.

I've seen the luck based bullshit several times myself. It is very very frustrating. 25 defense = blocking 66% of the time. Along time same lines, it always seems like you find items that just a bit better than the one you just bought.

That being said, the game isn't too hard so far. It is kind of my low intensity retreat.
