King is dead, All hail the new King?

My king just went alone to greet a Forgotten Beast that came in and got blown to bits. He also turned back to peasant upon death so I disassembled his coffin. Now I only have a duke. -- Is a new king supposed to come from somewhere or am I reduced to a duchy? I became a capitol a while back too. Population is almost 200 where the cap is.

Also, he had no wife nor children apparently.

As far as I know, there is only one king, but others might prove me wrong.
