Update today: I burned another DVD and started fresh. Setup completed without errors this time and everything appears to be functioning normally. I haven't started grabbing drivers yet (will be doing so after dinner) but I'll let you know if I still run into trouble with the "Coprocessor" or otherwise.

Thanks for your troubleshooting assistance yesterday. :) I was getting so fed up and frustrated with it. Today has gone a lot smoother, thankfully!

Well... huzzah!

Maybe it was just an error in the disk you'd used before? I'm glad it is working for you now.

I guess, but I just assumed that if the "verify" process checked out fine, then the disc would be okay. ???

I'll be doing this all again tomorrow for my personal machine. I'm still dreading it, but at least there will still be one working machine in the house if anything goes wrong this time. :P

My PC is a lot older than the family comp, albeit with most of its components having been replaced over the years. But it's notorious for random hardware failures. The same year I got it, the harddrive died, the graphics card melted, the PSU committed hari-kiri and the motherboard had to be replaced. I'm not sure what I paid all that extra for, just for it to be called "Alienware" and have a casing literally three times bigger than any other PC I've ever owned (that's why I called it "Big Bertha" :D).

Well, if you have the spare storage space you could always do a full image/backup of your harddrive so if anything goes wrong you can just restore.

Setup is going veeeeeeeeeeeeeeeery slowly. Worryingly slowly. Every step of the process has taken a huge amount of time to get started. It finally finished copying files, then rebooted, and now I'm waiting at a black screen. I have no idea if anything is happening-- my hdd light is broken (pre-existing problem, unrelated) and the fans drown out most of the noise, so I can't tell if there's any activity at all. :/

Put your finger on the HDD casing, or near it, and see if you feel any vibrations.

Sorry I didn't get back sooner.

It was a weird problem. Setup was still running, but for some reason I had no display. I searched and found lots of similar reports, but everyone seemed stumped by the problem.

Eventually I found some posts talking about dual displays, and how setup forces output to VGA first, before other outputs.

So how did I get my display back? Switched on my TV, and there it was. :D

I'm finally done with installing Windows! And I already feel it was worth it. Barring a few general annoyances, I really like the new interface. My mum still hates the folder address bar not telling her where folders are, and when I first formatted that computer (Vista) she lost a lot of photos because they were hidden somewhere in "Public" instead of being where they should be. But I think I've figured out why that happened, so it should be easier to deal with now.

I've already said it, but I'll say it again-- thank you for your help, forsaken. :) While I did manage to get through much of this with some lucky googling, it was always reassuring that if I couldn't find an answer, I could always check back here for replies, and you were very patient and helpful.

Now, off to play a victory game of Just Cause 2! :D
