All of my consorts are the same sex as their affiliate.  Duke consort, duchess consort, queen consort.  So I'm not entirely sure how Toady intended the term when he included it.  When I saw they were all matching sexes, I assumed that Toady meant it more as an assistant or attendant or butler.

Well, I've only gotten over 100 population once, but I've got a Duchess and a (male) Duke consort.  I guess some dwarves are just different.

Maybe so, but when my Duchess Consort died, Duke had an unhappy thought about losing a spouse

Yeah, I didn't put in any checks for the king consort apparently.  I haven't seen it happen with the other consorts, but they are supposed to have opposite genders, at least until the rules can go into the raws/be randomized.
