Just seems weird since they're offering it to sell a licensed product. But if it's free, it's free.

What? That they are selling something that's free along with the actual game? Since xcom will pretty much not run in vista/7 without dosbox, they cannot sell one without the other. The reason they make money out of xcom is dosbox.

In either way, that wasn't valve's doing. This is the file that comes with steam's dosbox:

X-COM: UFO Defense
=============================

This (official) 2K Games re-release of X-COM: UFO Defense runs on DOSBox. This should enable full compatibility on Windows 9X, XP and Vista systems. Should you want to tweak the settings, you can edit the dosbox.conf file. Just be careful and BACK IT UP before making any changes.

For support with DOSBox, visit the official DOSBox site at http://www.dosbox.com/ or the VOGONS (Very Old Games on New Systems) forums at http://vogons.zetafleet.com/.

The version included with this release is DOSBox 0.72. In compliance with the GNU license, the source code for this version is included in the dosbox_source folder.

Special Thanks to the DOSBox team for all their help in helping to get this decade old game running again!

Also a big thanks to everyone at xcomufo.com and strategycore.co.uk for their help testing and preparing these games for release.

I actually use a modified version of Steam's UFO: Enemy Unknown for my Let's Play. Works very well.
