Its a downloadable(free) RTS, that can work even on dial-up. Its rarely demanding on your CPU(unlike Supreme Commander), and the units are pretty balanced. There are about 11 factories, with 6 types of units. Hovercrafts, tanks, walking bots, planes, ect. Gameplay works a lot like Supreme Commander, but focuses more on that most units never truely become obsolete. So, a tech 2 will not always win against someone still stuck in tech 1. There is also a lot of strategy(spamming is just a valid tactic as flanking, since spamming requires a good economy), and I find that im constantly learning new ways to destroy people.
However, there are no tutorials built in and its got a very high learning cliff. Basically, once you get over the cliff, its easy to learn the rest. I concider myself slightly below moderate skill in the scale of things, so I can help you out in the begining.
So, here is how to get the game running on your computer. I can expand it if I realise obvious things arent so obvious.
First, download the engine here.
http://springrts.com/wiki/DownloadAfter downloading it, double click the file and go through the installer.
After that, lets get the BA mod.
http://springrts.com/phpbb/viewforum.php?f=44&sid=32e8710399ef5ca97ff1d80e395c7d2eYou should be able to find the topic with the latest version of BA.
Once downloaded, double click the file to have it automatically moved to the appropiate folder.
Now we need maps.
http://www.springfiles.com/subcategory.php?id=1Download the maps there and double click the files to move them to your map folder. A couple suggestions I could propose are Small Supreme Battlefield, Barren, Tempest, and SmallDivide. That should get you started.
To start playing, go to "all programs"(may be somewhere else on other systems) ---> Spring ---> Spring Lobby. From there I dont think I need to hold your hand, but try spectating a few games. Also, if you want some single player practice, "test" spring first. Or go to the singeplayer tab in Spring Lobby.
Finely, a quick guide. You start with a commander. If your team losses all its commanders, you lose. Commander explodes in a nuclear explosion when it dies. There are two resources, energy and metal. Metal deposits are scattered throughout the map. Energy can be converted into metal. To advance to tech 2, build a constructor out of a factory and have that constructor build a tech 2 factory. To chat, press enter. To chat to your team, "alt+enter". To chat to everyone, "ctrl+enter". To chat to spectators, "shift+enter". If you find yourself zooming all the way in and out, press alt.
Some features I forgot: Direct control, you look through the unit's eyes and fire its weapons. Press c to do it. Destructable terrain, nukes will actually create a hole on most maps.
