40d won't accept *.png tileset

Since I've wanted to see how 40d differs from 2010 (Urist Mcnoob here) I dl'd it from "older versions" [DF 0.28.181.40d (September 8, 2008)].
After that I'd downloaded some 16x16 tileset (let's call it mytileset.png) and unpacked it to data/art, changed lines in init from "curses_640x480.bmp" to "mytileset.png"  and also changed gridsize and resolution to be suited for 16x16 tileset with 1024x768 resolution.

But now I seem to have failed something, because the game won't use mytileset and so it won't show nothing (black screen, even though the game is fine, so intro and menu comes up). Also, I've found out that old graphical full packs, like 40d mike mayday's use diffrent init and probably diffrent game exe since they can use .png tilesets. Could some more technically gifted person help me?

Regular 40d doesn't support PNG tilesets, only BMP. You need one of the SDL versions, like 40d16.

Ah, the days of easy armies, 15z levels, and easy to recognize HFS, when magma was a real benefit and finding an underground lake was the shizzle.

Sorry to bump this thread but wanted to ask one more little thing:
Which 40d version should I use? 40d16? 40d19?
