Just use a zone (i). Mark it as a pit and assign the cat to it. No bridge needed.

D'oh!  And I was feeling so clever for working out that I could build a floor attached to the bridge, then build a restraint on it and assign the cat.

Hrmph.

Edit: Except that just amounts to throwing bricks at the magma, so pah.

If you make the pit a pond and they dump a water in to make obsidian the block will reveal stuff everywhere it falls.

Yeah, I noticed that when my mason failed to build the floor.  Revealed lots of stuff.

I still threw the cat in.
