I prefer to take to the field when I am defending my fortress, so there's no sort of trickery involved if I were to invade.  The better army prevails.

It's unlikely that any normal invading force would be better than 40 dwarves clad in layered masterwork steel armor and bristling with steel spears and war hammers, however.

Except the fact when you actually try to seccede from the Mountainhome's civ and SUDDENLY 20 SQUADS OF ADAMANTINE

Toady really, really needs to implement this at some point.

Rappelling down into the local volcano's caldera and bashing in the access door might work.

Bashing in the side door to the power generator and bumrushing the access stairs.

Figuring out a way to jam the front gates.
