River looks like Chasm

Short after embark I look after my river only to see that it looks like a chasm from the 40d version.
Is this a new Feature of .13 or is it just an strange embark?

I'm going to guess you embarked at the start of the river/brook.  The head of a flow tends to resemble a chasm.  This isn't new, and was done in 40d.

If it's something else, we'll need a screenshot to diagnose.

Had one of my previous embark sites at the tail end of a brook in the desert. Was interesting to see it splayed out. Contemplated converting it into a fish farm, but new version came out before I finished making plans.

There are no dumb questions in DF, only gameplay elements that you didn't know about until your next fortress dies from it.
