Indeed. Now that bauxite is plentiful, we should have no more trouble making magma-proof devices.

When actually forging things, its relatively rare to actually MELT the metal you're working with.  That's casting, (and often is done with pewter and copper.)  Generally, you just need to heat it up enough that it becomes flexible enough to be hammered into the shape you want.

Medieval steel is not generally a true steel, but a mixture or carbonized iron and iron.

Mechs don't go in bins.

Not sure quite why; as far as I know goblet = 3 from one bar/stone, and 10 base value. Mechanisms = 1 from one stone, and 30 base value. Same base value, except a mechanism only needs to be hauled once. Three goblets need three hauling tasks to get it to the trade depot.</STRONG>

Ah, but if you buy out the caravan with just one goblet, a mechanism would be wasted! And besides, goblets are put in bins, while I don't think mechanisms are- goblets therefore require fewer hauling tasks.

Personally, I take the safe road and just grab a few bauxite at the pre-embark party config. Raw stone's dirt cheap, and it's not like you'll need much of it anyway.

Has the advantage of insuring you'll always have access to the stuff when you need it.

Hey, is it possible for us to just mod in steel / iron mechanisms, out of curiousity?

Umm, would guess probably not possible, but it would be VERY easy to just mod melting points and to make magnetite withstand magma, if that's your thing.

If only.
There is no item type for mechanisms, although it's possible to even smelt cows out of iron  :(

Tho there isn't really much point, functionally, as you can always import raw bauxite.

And if stone managment is an issue, Sean Mirrsen has a mod that makes all stone economic, so you can use the Stone menu to specify which stone types can and cannot be used at any given time.

You can USUALLY buy bauxite. It's big difference. Some dwarven civilizations just don't offer any bauxite.

Just buy some bauxite on the embark screen. They are 3 points a piece and cause you only need them in the parts submerged in magma you need just a few.
If you cannot bring bauxite in embark I think it means that there is non in the whole world. Happens quite regularly on pocket maps.

Same here.  If you start off with 6 bauxite, and immeadiatly build 3 floodgates and 3 mechanisms with them as soon as you embark, you don't have to worry later on.  You also don't have to deal with your mason manufacturing 20 limestone floodgates before they get around to picking up that piece of bauxite you dropped right next to their shop.     :D

Ah, finally read to the end, didn't realize it was an old thread.
