Heroes of Might and Magic?
« on: September 22, 2012, 06:17:46 pm »

I've been playing VI for a bit now. It's actually pretty fun, except for obvious computer cheating on rare occasions. For example, I was just now fighting an army of demons. I lost the battle, but it was a minor hero and fairly easy to replace. I also whittled down the demon army to a few Juggernauts and a Breeder mother.

Cue next hero attacking to get the territory back and the enemy had respawned almost all his troops, albeit the basic, non-upgraded versions. WTF computer? Is that a feature of the demon army? I've never played demons, but that just seems like serious bullshit since necros have the same deal but they have to go back to their castle to do it.

All Heroes games go here though. The series is large, and Heroes III is still fun today. I have it on my computer now, actually. Anytone else play these games lately?

I sunk a few hours into V just a day or so ago. Not far into it, but I like the size of the battle fields~ It's not been that bad, so far. Definitely see how it was getting back to the III roots. Think that was the one that was trying to do that, anyway.

The other half of it is that I've sunk quite a few more hours into the recent(ish) King's Bounty games in the last week or so, which is like... HoMM in RPG mode, and quite nice. Not much else to say about things, heh.

Used to play a fair bit of 4 against a mate, as well as 1+2 years ago. I've got 3 and 5 laying around somewhere, but I just haven't put any time into them.

I sort of like 4, even though it was pretty different from the rest of the series. Had to make so many house rules while playing it as a competition against my friend. Even with Equilibrius it was unbalanced as hell. Strangely, the mod that was meant to balance it made some things even worse. Go undead! As if you weren't kick arse enough already.

(I just got the funniest sense of deja vu for some reason. Oh well).

I agree that Heroes 3 is still fun today, while i play it a lot less than in its prime, i still fire it from time to time. Though not the campaigns that i have not played in years and don't feel any need to replay them, but only with scenario/random map that i continue to enjoy .

I don't think my dad and his friend have played a full map of III for as long as I can remember. One always quits as soon as things go south for them.

Problem: Would have to get seven friends that like HoMM.

Personal rundown: 3 is the undisputed classic. 4 is kind of poorly executed. 5 does many things better than 3, but some much worse. 6 is well-polished but still lacks content, and grinding elements are meh.
The problem is that I'm not even sure whether HoMM VI will ever get more content, last I heard it's uncertain whether there will ever be an expansion. If HoMM VI got its two expansions like V did, it might become a legitimately great game. (HoMM V vanilla kind of sucked after all, but come ToTE it pretty much is III's equal in many terms.) Also the DRM on that game sucks donkey balls.

VI has the pirates DLC and they're already coming out with another semi-expansion. It looks like they're breaking them up so you can customize your game more (and I bet they make more money, but...)

I'm not quite sure what you mean by grinding. I haven't seen any more grinding than in other heroes games, most of my XP comes from chests or large battles.

It is harder to defend though. The fort system means you have to have a garrison in every fort which spreads your army a bit more than in other games. I find a new hero and one week of troops from a fully built castle can hold down a fort easily enough. Then you have a real hero who does all the battles and takes more territory.

I just played a game of Heroes III Wake of Gods with my roommate today, coop against 3 AIs - it's still pretty awesome. I have to say WOG is probably my most favourite TBS ever - and not just because of nostalgia, it's the insane amount of options you can tweak and the already really, really good foundation of Heroes III.

Haven't really tried the later games, probably should do that at some point.
