Advantage to history?
« on: September 14, 2010, 10:05:05 am »

Genning a world for me takes a really, really long time. In particular generating a history takes forever, and the longer the history the more it takes. Genning a large world with a 1050 year history takes 4-5 hours for me.

I was wondering, is there any major disadvantage of genning a world with a shorter history? Presumably there'll be fewer cool things for engravings, but is there anything else? Like, will civilizations be too weak or too sparse or anything like that? Titans too common? Etc, etc...

I never saw a difference between weak or sparse. In fact, I think you'll see the opposite: More civilizations (as they wouldn't have had an opportunity to die off yet), and more megabeasts. I'd test it out, just do like a 100 years or so of history.

Longer worldgen allows civilizations to spread out and cover larger areas, expanding the range of trade goods they can offer. For Elves, this is good, because Elves that settle near savage mountains, savage deserts, and tropical moist broadleaf forests will be bringing you giant eagles, giant desert scorpions, and elephants (respectively) for trade.

It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

You might try playing with a medium sized world map, they take far less time to gen than you'd expect (much less than 1/4th).

Aye, definately gen a medium (or even small) world. There is also some culling option that can be turned off do decrease CPU usage (thus speeding up genning) but it will consume more memory in return.

If your looking for biome variety, a thin and tall map offers the full variation between hot and cold, and is relatively quick to gen.

Ustxu Iceraped the Frigid Crystal of Slaughter was a glacier titan. It was the only one of its kind. A gigantic feathered carp composed of crystal glass. It has five mouths full of treacherous teeth, enormous clear wings, and ferocious blue eyes. Beware its icy breath! Ustxu was associated with oceans, glaciers, boats, and murder.
