Merciful Ettins?

Is it normal for an Ettin to not attack an adventurer if they are crippled via spine injury?
I've had this happen several times.

Who is crippled?
YOur adventurer or the ettin?

If it is the latter, then it is rather normal...
intelligent beings usually try to flee /avoid combat,
if their wounds are severe enough

He just stood there, announcing his name and kills every 40-50 attacks (from me).
