Slaughter the first, maybe the second wave of elf merchents and they'll bring a lot more pets.

Because it's fun to capture them and then throw them down a tower, inside the depot

They want us to stop killing trees. It is the one thing we dwarves will never compromise about. We must be able to kill our trees.

DorfFortress Forum: A question is asked about numerous things, including elves. 200 pages of "Elves like Magma, lol!" Ensue. I wouldn't want it any other way.

why does everyone have a problem with elves?
I think most players are a bit put off about their culture. We are viewing it as hipocritical retardness. Their trading practices (being nasty to them can actually give better items to trade) certainly do not help.

Anyway, a good reason to genocide as any other. If not elves, something else in game would end up as DF version of Jews (most probably kobolds).

Since this seems to be a good place to post a newbie question.   Is there a way to specify an ocean as a water source?  I am trying to get my reactor going to pump water in from the ocean and fill my cistern but I am having trouble finding a water source that my dwarves will use to fill the reactor.   The first cavern is 100+ levels down and it didnt have water the next one is another 40 or so, but i'm not sure if it has water or not yet.

Build a well over the ocean - they have a magic desalinating power and your dwarves won't take saltwater.
