Dwarves are lazy assholes.
« on: September 13, 2010, 11:55:42 am »

I'm trying to create a farm before winter comes in by using buckets to wet a pond and build a farm in it. I have the process down, and it's working. However, I have two dwarves actually working. I have an excess of 10 buckets not being used, 15 idlers, and all of them have hauling enabled. It's currently autumn, so I need to speed this process up.

How large are your Water Source / Pond zones? Only one tile per dwarf can be used at any one time, so if you want 15 dwarves to run simultaneously, you need to designate a zone that is at least 15 tiles around the edge of the pond.

Actually, only one dwarf per *pond* will be active at any given time.  If you want 15 dwarves at a time to fill ponds with buckets, you'll need to designate 15 separate pond zones.  And you'll need 15 buckets.  And 15 dwarves.  And booze.  You always need booze.

This is why I always make my farm plots 2 squares by five squares, and fill each one by creating 5 pit/pond zones (half floor half open space) above them.  A bunch of dwarves grab buckets and fill the pond in no time, delete the zones, floor over them and make upper level into offices.

See, I knew there was something I missed. Thanks for the correction!

When I need muddy terrain for a farm, I usually just breach a murky pool from the side, and let the water spread on the terrain. I use the created muddy area as a farm.

This is the fastest way that doesn't involve needless risk of cavern-based death.

Yes, but I have no nearby murky pools. Even if I DID, I've already spend two freaking seasons getting this thing ready. I demand my dorfs give me results!

Winter came. Everything froze. I'm fucked. Thanks for trying, at least.

To start with I build a farm on the surface. Just a temporary farm. No irrigation needed.

Then I build a gigantic, excessively engineered plumbing project complete with bridges, floodgates, pumps, levers, grates, fortifications, pressurized water, and drainage systems.
