33d - Math error with total fortress wealth
« on: December 04, 2007, 07:03:00 pm »

Total fortress wealth calculation double counts items.

Example:

My strange mood dwarf created a door worth 147,000*.   The values according to my appraiser was Furniture: 148,000* (door + other items)  and Held/worn: 150,000 (door plus other items)

The door is counted as furniture, and it also appears as held/worn because the creator is still carrying it around.

My total fortress worth is listed well north of 300k, when none of the other columns could account for this.  The door is counted twice, and is doubling my fortress worth.

Yeah, we need some kind of school for the appraisers. But then again, economics may not be a dwarves biggest talent.

the value of an object is coveted twice by many dwarves
they are less of an appraiser of wealth because everything is valuable but dwarves do love to keep stocks of everything they own

The same is true for armor and clothing that is produced and then worn.

Think of it this way, when a dwarf carries something, all the other dwarves get to see it. Making its effective value more noticeable. twently suits of masterwork plate armor don't inspire much when only the armorer gets to see them as he places them in a poorly traveled stockpile, but those same armors resplendently adorning ones militia as they perform public sparring drills are very notable.

I can understand why they appear in both armor, and held/worn .. or in furniture..  that makes sense.  My report is that while they appear in multiple categories, they are added together for the total fortress wealth.

140,000 value armor should count as 140,000 ONCE, not for each category.  This total number affects a number of game options, like nobles, immigrants, etc.

i really don't remember if this was present in the old version.

The point I am making is that the actual value, while important, is not as important as percieved value when it comes to attracting migrants and nobles. Having millions locked away in a vault where no one sees or uses them is great. But having those millions richly displayed and in use will spread word of your forts wealth much faster and more effectively.
