Making a game on a virtual tabletop?
« on: September 11, 2010, 03:08:03 am »

Ok,so Gametable is a (free) program which is basically a tabletop game simulator. You have a grid, can place stuff, set attributes for stuff and so on.What I want to do is make a game to host on the forums via screenshots. However making a game would take some time so I want to know what game you would prefer.

I think I put it in the right place. As far as I know "forum games" is for games, not discussion of games.

On second thought I may make it for Battlegrounds instead of Gametable. It looks better by far.

Well, first you have to find an RPG engine. I suggest DnD (Although I've never actually played it) or GURPS, they both work with things like this.

From there it's just like playing a normal RPG except you have the screenshots to help you.

I plan to create a simple system by myself.DnD and Gurps cost money AFAIK.

Right now I'm trying to find a good program.Gametable is very basic, but Battlegrounds costs money.

Not funny.

Anyway I kind of thought out what the engine is going to be like.

If it's going to be a fantasy RPG or tactical co-op,which it's probably going to be (votes),then it'll be a combination of GURPS and DnD,but very simplified.Generally basic roll would be 2d6 +/- modifiers/stats.Instead of an attributes-skills-feats system,I'd have either an attributes-feats or skills-feats system.

If it's going to be a war game,I'll probably borrow some things from WH40K and have a wounds system with damage vs armor and accuracy vs dodge rolls. Also using 2d6 +/- modifiers.

Edit:Probably going to use Gametable for maps and do everything else in text files. What do you prefer squares or hexagons?
