I have a format for them.
{#}[profession]{#}
First number is for the immigrant wave they came in.  Profession should be self explanitory.  The second number is to differentiate between two dwarves from the same wave who got the same job.  If they become legendary then I ad an * to either side of the profession

So:
4*Farmer*3
The 3rd dwarf assigned to farming from the 4th wave.  He is also legendary.

This method also allows for having a seniority system installed later based on previous waves at a glance.  You can also customize symbols based on your needs.  Have a symbol for military trained militia member.  Have one for particularly social friend makers you don't want to die.  Etc.
