The maximum level is 100, and the idea is that after you beat the game you can battle your friends' teams.

In FireRed I passed 100, and somehow my cousin got plenty of 200s. Then again, she had the game for some time.

What's wrong with lots of plot, too? I like lots of plot. I'm sure a lot of people like lots of plot. And X-Com far from "some dum sci-fi game". It's really fun. It may not be your cup of tea, but I like it. Lots of people like it.
