Back in 2D it would happen in civs you traded with in dwarf mode.  The stuff you trade (including the wagon) actually goes somewhere, but the civs currently don't do anything with the items and they just sit there in the wagon.

And then I believe when an adventurer shows up it starts the wagon's trade depot pathfinding and because it can't find one it scuttles itself.

Good news is all the stuff on the wagon is now free for the taking!  Only the unarmed merchant that came with the wagon will fight you over it. As it doesn't seem to identify it as belonging to the civ.

If I am not mistaken, you somehow caused the candlenut wagon to be scuttled.
