Filling Pits
« on: September 05, 2010, 06:56:11 am »

In my new fortress, I have cage traps set up everywhere so I can catch elephants. It's going well, but there are some side-effects. One of them is my animal stockpile is filled with gorillas. Since you can't properly trade untamed animals, I decided there had to be a more creative way.

Now, I know you can dump untamed animals into pits by constructing their cage right next to a pit. However, when I want to assign an animal to the pit, all it says is "Gorilla". I have no way of knowing which gorilla is which. Is there any way to solve this or will I just have to make a pit big enough to hold all of my gorillas?

Thanks in advance.

I think you're just going to have to pit all the gorillas. Otherwise when you assign one, it'll be a gamble which one the dwarves go to collect and dump. Shouldn't be too big a problem for gorillas; if you were dumping gobbos or so, I've seen it be a problem if the goblin has to be escorted a long way to the pit...

Alternatively, just smash the cage or drop it in magma if you don't mind losing the cage, it's a lot less fiddly.

Hey, a gorilla killed my sheriff, you know. The guy had 6 war elephants, too. ::)

Anyway, I'd prefer keeping my cages, that way I don't have to keep on making new ones. Oh well, guess I'll just make one big pit and cover the edge with cages. Thanks.

Animals appear in the same order on pit screens, cage assignment screens, and the z->animals screen, so you can figure out which is which by careful counting.

You don't so much need the cage exactly next to the pit for even the most dangerous captives. Just make sure it's close enough that the dwarf won't stop in the middle of hauling to go eat or something.

You should be able to get away with putting an animal stockpile up at your pit and just forbidding any cages with non-gorillas that you also haven't built (for why?)
Really you could just as well use the gorillas all over though. Stick some in the barracks and some in the dining room and a dozen in your noble's crypt. After all what proper dwarf wouldn't feel restfully dead in a room full of howling apes?
