Just to clarify: Near the bottom (z-wise) of your map, beneath the third cavern layer, is a magma "sea". The safest, easiest way to go is to build your workshops directly above the sea, with single channeled tiles to give your workshops access to the magma. If you're more ambitious there are methods to bring it closer to the surface, but they involve either a monumental pump stack or a large, controlled cave-in and carry some risk of Fun.

Using coal is also perfectly viable, assuming you embarked with a sedimentary layer. Currently sedimentary layers are loaded with lignite and bituminous coal, easily enough to outfit an army with steel. Refining does take extra time and effort but with none of the risks or logistics issues of magma.
