I haven't been playing all that long (started 31.06) but I've had good luck with mayors, particularly in my last fort. In the twelve years this fort has been going I can't remember a time when he wasn't ecstatic. After he walked out on the elf liason in order to forge an axe (becoming a legendary weaponsmith) I knew this was a great dwarf. When given a barony and knew instantly who deserved it. Now he is my duke and his demands involve such things as building beds and smelting gold bars.
