Cities by the river
« on: September 06, 2010, 03:39:21 pm »

I've been making lots of maps in hopes of finding something that in real life is quite usual: a city built right next to a river delta and sea.
And by this I mean the cities that show on world map as being on top of a (preferably big) river (and not some measly brook).

I think human populations should get bonuses for settling on rivers and river deltas (such as better natural transportation and food bonus).
These sites make for nice fortress games. Also, I keep hoping for some open magma near such a site. So far unable to find any...
IRL, iceland has heating from volcanoes and hot springs. No reason why such sites shouldn't exist in the game world as well. Especially in the arctic where a natural heat source should give a survival bonus.

Also: Volcanoes near seashores or over a big river. -- Right now volcanoes right next to rivers (not brooks) or over them are impossible to find and I think are probably impossible to do by the worldgen. Yet we have such sites IRL in Iceland and Hawaii.

So, MORE big river systems and cities over them, please. Current worldgen system doesn't create them on the world map, only as a very rare fluke. Brooks suck.
Also waterfalls. Too much erosion makes for a dull scenery!

Engraved on the monitor is an exceptionally designed image of FPS in Dwarf Fortress and it's multicore support by Toady. Toady is raising the multicore. The artwork relates to the masterful multicore support by Toady for the Dwarf Fortress in midwinter of 2010. Toady is surrounded by dwarves. The dwarves are rejoicing.

I think this should happen automatically once we added in a better world gen trade system and population movement. Small farms on these locations would do much better because of the trade which in turn would attract more people ext. It would still mean you need to generate a lot of history for this to work.
