You can't kill the red eyed knight yet.

Yes you can, it's simply not really worth it.
Nor can you open the door yet in any case.
[/quote]Actually, I used to farm him for the insane amount of souls he had on him. The trick is to draw him into the room, after breaking all the furniture, and dodge until you can score a backstab. He goes down after about 3 or 4 backstabs, and possibly much faster if your weapon is made for backstabs. I'd also advise just enough armor to survive the encounter, but not so much that dodging becomes hard.

Or lure him back to the tower and push/trick him into falling down the pit.

I still think the Tower Knight Archstone blue knights is an easier way to get souls, considering you only need to walk a very short distance and it presents small risk.
But to each their own.

EDIT: Does anyone else find the Valley of Defilement a very depressing place?
Especially since the history of it is a dumping ground for aborted babies.

It's difficulty curve greatly resembles that of Dwarf Fortress.

You mean as in "5 days with a wiki, 3 months learning curve without one"? Or really hard at the beginning, much easier later?

Nope, I meant as in "A nearly vertical cliff. You learn by fucking up, and while getting the thing you fucked up last time right, you fuck up something new".
Playing without a shield is insanely hard, and I applaud anyone attempting dual wielding.

Is there any point to wielding the bastard sword 1-handed with the heater shield, if I have the 18 strength to do it?
Easier to defend, but less damage.

On the subject of weapons, I've been alternating between two-handing the Bastard Sword and playing Spartan with the Heater Shield and Winged Spear. It's been a good combo so far, the blade one to two-shots most enemies, and the Spear/Shield comes out for multiple enemies/other shield users/blue eye phantoms. My other weapons are listed in the first post. Any better strategies?
Seems a solid combo.
You might want to consider a ranged option for 4 to take care of the storm beasts (flying manta rays) which can get you killed on the ledge if they hit you when fighting a skeleton. It's not necessary but something to consider.

Even with the heater shield equipped, I'll probably do more damage with the sword than the spear. Can't attack while blocking with the sword though.

As for the Manta's, I do have the crossbow. But I'll jump off that bridge when I come to it. Seriously, I can't even get past the first three skellies in 4-1. Maybe I'll grind 1-1 for a while, maybe check out some of the other levels.

Is there any point to wielding the bastard sword 1-handed with the heater shield, if I have the 18 strength to do it? That is a crushing weapon, right? I'm only a point away from that, which I can get from farming the first skely easily.

Well, as you've probably noticed, a lot of these weapons have different swing animations.  They also have different swing animations depending on if you are holding them 1 handed or 2 handed.

Try swinging around the bastard sword 1-handed with heater shield first.  See if that is something you would like or not.

Its not about what weapon is the best, but what weapons you like more.  (Though, later on, there will be some powerful stuff... at the least you can upgrade your favorite weapons.)

I'll give that a try.

For all I know, they might be, but I discovered this out of boredom, and it impressed my brother XD

I actually never got that far into this game, and I don't have the time to screw around with it now, so setting it aside for a while. My brother was thoroughly frustrated by it, and stopped playing XD.

It's honestly not that bad, it just requires you to stop and think about why you died.
People who are used to breezing through games easily or being able to load up quicksaves will find it hard, but people who enjoy a more strict challenge will like it.

Something to keep in mind is that if a certain area is too hard, maybe it's because of your equipment choice* or the way you are approaching it.
Running into mobs aggressively will almost certainly get you killed.

*You can beat the game with any weapon, but certain types will be less effective in certain areas. For example, the lizardmen in World 2 are resistant to most attacks except for piercing or magic. Using a weapon with piercing attacks or blasting them with spells will make the area significantly easier.

Yes, this is a game where combat is defensive. The most effective way is to just keep your shield up with weaker enemies, dodge the stronger ones. Counterattack when possible. Swinging your sword around will get you killed. Running around on a flight of stairs will get you killed. In fact, most people that die in the beginning areas should have been careful around stairs.

There are also other things to watch out for. I'd recommend against using ephemeral eyes (1-ups, basically) until you get a hang of the game area you are in. Otherwise, it just makes the game harder every time you die. It does stuff like spawn worse enemies, which is great if you can fight them, not so great otherwise. Oh, and don't use up heroes souls, soldier souls, etc. until you plan on using them. Otherwise, you risk losing them the next time you die.

Glee!

Had a very nice run tonight. Checked out world 2-1, and got lots of item upgrades. Upped the Bastard Sword to +3, and the Winged Spear to +2. Heater shield + Bastard Sword turned out to be a pretty good mix once I got to 18 Str, provided I kept my equipped weight low so I could still dodge. Went back to world 4-1, managed to kill Skellies up to the first fog door, where I chickened out.  :D

Figured I'd give 1-1 another shot, I was running low on crescent grass. Ran in, started killing dudes. Decided I'd give 'Ol Red Eyes one last shot.

I nailed him.  :D

Left 1-1 with almost 6,000 souls, and something odd to report. I haven't gotten the Palace to White Tendency (I checked), but when I went to take a peek at the Dragons, they were gone. Completely. I didn't kill them, and as I said, World Tendency wasn't white. And since I didn't even try to get the items out there the first time through, they were still there for the taking, which I did.

Any idea what the hell happened there?

Soul Level is now 16, bumped Str to 22, End to 17. Considering wielding the Purple Flame shield, but I only get to keep my roll if I also have the Great Strength Ring on. Which is taking the Thieves Ring slot. That friggen shield is HEAVY, and I like to sneak up on things. Need to think about that some more.

If you are connected to the servers then they sometimes do strange things with the world tendencies.

Holiday events, but, there be no holiday I know of right now...

Flame Shield:  It is great, but can't riposte with it.  Has the best fire resist of the shields.  Super effective in some stages and against some bosses.

More endurance or less armor.  It'll work out eventually...
