it really would be quite interesting to improve the medical system to the point of amputation and cauterizing wounds.
Prostetic limbs of various types could also be used as well.
"How to train your dragon" comes to mind.

Now THAT gave me a SICK idea, if you have a missing hand and a sword you could remove the grip or pommel, and DRIVE THE STUMP INTO THE BLADE.  A few bandages later and TADA! A sword hand!

It also brings the following to mind:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/G%C3%B6tz_von_Berlichingen

Check this mutha out!  If Gotz von Berlichingen is not frikkin' dwarfy, I don't know who is!  Also, such prostheses were not limited to this individual during his time, and the technology to produce such things conceivably existed before the 16th century!  :D

The game in question is a roguelike named Iter Vehemens ad Necem (IVAN).  Quite entertaining, and bloody difficult.

I wish to see berserk dwarves tear themselves apart if they cannot find targets. And if they tear off a limb but find a target, they should wield it as a club.

Apparently having a redundant creature entry causes the game to say, "Oh, look, it's crazy world now. Nothing makes sense! Alligators live in houses!"
