Metalsmith transmutes stone to bronze in a kennel

I really have no idea how this one happened. My metalsmith was possessed and claimed the kennels, then collected two Gneiss stones and turned them into a bronze shield. I didn't have a forge... apparently dog treats are the next best thing?

Was the kennels transformed into a forge afterwards?  If a dwarf cannot find the proper shop, they will take over a random one and change it so that it works the way they want it to.  That would explain why he took the blocks...  Are you sure he didn't sneak in some bronze when you weren't looking?

Yeah, this is a bug related to what building the guy is standing on when possessed usually (though there might be other cases).  They'll mostly claim the right building (or a close building they can convert), but they can also claim the building they are standing on due to a bug.

I'm just about 100% positive he didn't grab any bronze, because I also didn't have any smelters. The kennels remained kennels after he left - I'm not even sure the anvil had shown up yet.

I had a guy make a bronze axe by grabbing some cassiterite ore (no malachite, definitely no smelted bronze), and a bunch of decorative bits. Maybe your dwarf did something similar?
