"I need the proper surface" doesn't mean you need a building made of stone blocks, it means you need physical stone blocks, like, sitting on your stockpile unused.
They may need to be light or dark stone too...

make all three kinds of stone blocks(light, grey, dark). one will probably do the trick.

See, this is why i hate it when my computer's HD dies on me. 8 Dwarf-fortress free days later and i forget things about how the game works. JHFC...  :o

With so much to do and how much depth this game has, its easy to forget something small like this.  Don't feel to bad.   :)

After destroying countless buildings throughout many games, I have come in and have had a nice brain fart.  I tried to destroy a bridge and forgot how to do it. lol

Talk about having an off day.

Yeah, just now I was trying to make a stockpile for charcoal...where was charcoal again? I can't find it, I think it was Bars/Blocks...

Oh yeah, it's the same as "coal," dummy. Took me a while to remember.
