Some questions for my 'OMGWTFTHISISAWESOME' Fort
« on: August 17, 2010, 01:37:39 pm »

Hi there guys!

Sooo, I've got some cool ideas and the perfect location for them, but I can't find or don't know some things.

1: How can i get my dwarfs to go 'inside'? I knew how to do it in the 40d version, but now i can't find it, and my little farmerdwarfs are getting chopped up :(

2: How can i mass dump/claim stuff? Like stones that clutter my stockpiles, or items left on the battlefield. And if a stone is on a tile of a stockpile, will this tile still be used as storage space?

3: When does a cave-in happen? Is it when a tile is not supported from below, and all surrounding tiles are gone? Also, can floors 'hang' from stairs? I.e. I channel out a lot of Z-levels except for one
square, which i connect with up/down stairs to a floor some levels above it, and then i dig under this square, so that it has no support from below or is connected to sides, only the stairs.

4: How fast does a magma pipe refill? Fast enough to have it flowing over continually?

That's all I can think of now :P and thanks to all of you who take time to answer these nooby questions :) I love you!

Cheers! Habba

1. There is no "stay inside" toggle anymore. Now, you need to use burrows.

2. (d) - (b) - (whatever). And, yes. The stone lying there is ignored by the stockpile.

3. When it isn't connected above, below, or from an orthogonal (not diagonal) tile. And, yes.

4. Eh... I don't really know.

Burrows really are a better system, they allow more control/flexibility. That said, what are your dwarves doing outside in the first place?

You can pump magma out faster than it refills. 3 pumps does it pretty fast for me.

I have to agree,it is much better, especially as now you´re also able to include "light"/outside regions within your burrow,
so that in case of an alarm, when you assign all dwarves to your alarm burrow, they will still be able to do outside work in ´regions that you have included as part of the burrow (for example outside regions behind your fortifications)
or, the other way round, as now you´re able to exclude underground regions from your burrow, so that you can keep your dwarves from wandering through underground regions that you consider to be unsafe (for example cavern areas)

1: Make all of the safe parts of your fort into a burrow called "safety" with 'w'. When an ambush comes, use 'm' to go to the military screen, press 'a' to go to alerts, and set "civ alerts" as restricted to "safety". You can have multiple burrow and choose which one to restrict civilians to as well, so if you get a spoiler beast you can choose to restrict your civs to the upper fort instead of the lower, and all kinds of cool things.

2a: d-b-d, select the corners of the area you want all items to be dumped in.
2b: I think items will still be stored there, but it's good practice to dump all your stones. Or maybe it's just my OCD. MUST HAVE CLEAN FORT.

3a: If a tile is supported from any side (left, right, up, down, top , bottom) it will stay up. Diagonals will not support anything.
3b: I'm not sure, but I think so. They can hang from supports, I'm sure of that.

4: Veeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeery slowly. An empty magma pipe will take about a season to fully refill. However, as long as you puncture in the middle you should be able to feed several magmafalls easily. You can also help your magma-pipe along a little bit with some pumps from the magma sea and magma recycling.

True, but at a certain velocity the resulting explosion expels invader-bits at fatal speeds. You don't want to be dropping trogdolyte-shaped shrapnel bombs into your boneworks.
Only in Dwarf Fortress...
