Engravings
« on: August 15, 2010, 06:41:56 pm »

Does anyone know where the raw files for engravings are? ...are there any? I was planning on fiddling with the background color and changing the engraving tile so that engravings make my fortress look impressive instead of busy and hard to look at.

I don't know if the lexicon of symbols is something that can be modded, though it may be influenced by the entity entry for that civilization - that is, the things they choose to decorate with (and/or use in names) may be controllable within the total list of them, but what they show up as when engraved may be hard-coded. At least for the abstract things - if an item has a tile, it will render as that tile when engraved(an engraving of a plump helmet will show up as a spade).

If you want your fort's display to be less busy, either use the designation to show/hide engravings, or consider changing the init.txt(I think; might be init_d) option to have engravings start obscured. The colours will still get inverted, letting you see at a glance that the tile is engraved, and loo[k]ing at the tile will still show you the -detailed- (or whatever) floor, which you can then zoom in on with Enter for more details of the engraving. The designation can still be used to toggle specific areas, if there's one place that you want engravings to be seen but want to take advantage of their benefits elsewhere too.

Fiddling with the colors may require building on particular types of stone, though.

Does the show/hide engravings commands affect ALL engravings or can you specify somehow?

It's a designation. As with any designation, you select one corner, then the other, and everything in the marked rectangle gets toggled. You can do this to a single tile, or an entire z-level, or anything in between, as you see fit. The game remembers what a tile was set to, so you can do this multiple times to get the exact shape you want, and it won't screw up the earlier ones.

The init option affects any and all new engravings(but not, IIRC, ones that were already in place before you loaded the game).

Sweet I think I'm gonna have to start engraving my floors now. They always blended into my walls to much.

Normally the floor tiles (like most other things) have a black background. When you engrave, the background turns white or brown. In my init file, "engravings start obscured" was already on. I'm not talking about the random pictures that show up as engravings, just the normal inverted tiles. Some graphics sets come pre-packaged with altered init/raw files that make use of normally unused tiles, so I'm almost certain that somewhere there is a raw file I could use to change it. But I could be wrong. Problem is I have no idea where to find it. Ideas?
