Above ground crop troubles...
« on: August 15, 2010, 10:54:51 am »

So, i'm attempting a fully above ground fortress, with the mining being done through only wide pit-style quarries. I've started a large wooden wall, bedroom building, and more. Now, i gathered and chopped my entire area for ample supplies, and aquired about 6 prickle berries, which i was delighted to find: they grow all year long!. i started an above ground farm plot, and designated them for planting all year round, but my farmer has yet to plant them after a full season. there's still 6 of them, stored in my stockpile, and they've remained there. I'm not really short on food at this point, as i have a fisherman and other gathered plants, but would like help quickly if you can, as my gatherers seem frightened of the zombie goats very nearby and decline to gather some areas....

brew the berries into prickle wine, then plant the seeds.

a 5x2 spot of prickle berries or strawberries should sustain your fortress nicely in the first year or two.  that and butchering migrant livestock.

Something silly, but did you re-assign the crop to be planted after the season changed, or did you set the crop to be planted for each season in turn?

Press Z, and go to the Kitchen tab. Scroll down to the plant you are wanting brewed and press B to turn the Brew entry blue.
The plant will now be used in brewing at some point.
