I have...a PLAN.

I plan to train the greatest military any fort has ever seen (in 40d naturally, I'm not messing around with the new version's military mess!), breach into the Adamantine, conquer it, and then make three vaults branching off of the lowest level of the cavern.  One for all the Adamantine as it goes through the various stages of production.  One for all the artifacts, usable or not.  And the last one will be for finished goods.  There's a reason for that.

Namely because I intend to make the traders trade right next to the eerily glowing pit.  I figure that's good enough to make them take a few bucks off.

If you accidentally lock the elves in the depot and wait until they're insane to capture them in cages and then lock the next group of elves in the depot and unleash the insane elves from their cages, that's still somehow your fault.

I don'y think it's the same in 40d. I'm not sure if adamantine is the same, and I'm not sure HFS is even there in 40d, excluding pits.

Hmmm. Simply isn't being made. Coins that is. Where can the RAWs be found?

Never mind. Just VERY lazy dwarfs.

I always construct a large natural stone Vault underground to store all of my valuables.

This time, it's under the second cavern, in the middle of a marble layer. The whole thing is smoothed and engraved, and guarded by two doors.

Inside is two stockpiles.

The first contains every artifact my fortress has ever made, with the exception of an artifact trap component that sits in a weapon trap in my front door.
[...]

Since 90% of my fortress's artifacts are crap "special," I usually chuck "store" them in a nondescript "inconspicuous" hole-in-the-wall "hole-in-the-wall" at the very lowest level of my fortress.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Considering how far from my disappointed eyes "deeply" they've been hidden, and that the halls they're in are so big, and empty (nothing but engraved walls and undumped stone) they're probably incredibly safe.

Oh, here's the rest of level they're on: [warning:big .png]

My vault? My vault's for the number one trade item in my fortress:

Trash dropped by Goblin Sieges when they try to enter my land:

Except iron/steel stuff, that goes right into a pile next to the smelters.

The 3rd Cell is well on it's way to being full and I've still barely made a dent in the oceans of garbage on the surface traps. I could toss them in that chasm near by, but meh.

But no, I guess I do have a special sort of vault for the most cherished of objects my fortress. It's guarded by uncounted weapon/stone/cage traps, 30-some war dogs, an array of early warning horses, more traps, and about 250 surly, vomit-soaked beards-on-legs: [much smaller image]

My greatest champion's sarcophagus, my favorite artifact (his platinum gauntlet,) oh and the Queen who had him killed for having a nicer burial chamber ...buried alive with him.
so now she can enjoy it forever
great idea!

He he he.  Yeah, it almost looks done...  alas...  those who are in your teens, hold on until your twenties...  those in your twenties, your thirties...  others, cling to life as you are able...
It should be pretty fun though.

Perhaps one tip that I can share after many, many forts.  To reduce goblin clutter laying on the surface, make sure you kill goblins in a well-defined area above ground.  I used to send my squads charging across the map as soon as an ambush was detected, but eventually I realised this would mean my haulers would also have to go to the scene of the battle.  Now I tend to use stay inside orders or burrows, and have the goblins haul their trash to me.

My lumber industry is voracious, I need all the lumber merchants will bring and a sizable portion of the forests available on the map. Since I can't always control where the forests grow, I've essentially built a wall around the entire map area, up and down hills as necessary. So, sieges (they never ambush anymore) all die in predictable areas: one of the many gatehouses on the borders for merchants to use:[large .gif image]

I don't use vaults. Every craft artifact is another kobold incinerator on my map.
