Shells and Fishing ?
« on: August 13, 2010, 08:19:15 am »

All game my damn fey dwarves have been asking for shells. I have lost three or four to this so far. Now my legendary +5 fighter is asking for them. For some reason there are no fish on the map. My dwarves initially started trying to fish, but quickly gave up with no results at all. when I buy turtles etc, and try to process them, I don't seem to get any shells. Is there any way that I can acquiire them ?

I don't want to lose my militia commander. (and possibly half my fortress also)

Also, does the fishing zone work ? I cannot get it to work at all. I can get all of the other zones to work, I think. But the fishing one does not seem to function on this map. no numbers appear next to fishing when i try.

Thanks in Advance. :)

You don't get shells from turtles you buy anymore, only from raw turtles you have to fish on your map.

If your zones don't list fishing as an option when you create them, it means there are no fish to be caught in that zone.  Either there were none to begin with, or you already caught them all.

If you can't get any turtles by fishing, you can't get shells.  The only way to save moody dwarves demanding shells in that case is with modding.  My preferred solution is to mod the material template raw file so that hooves and horn count as shell.  You can then butcher a cow and your dwarf will then use cow hooves or horn instead of turtle shell.

Dig! In 40d you could get raw turtle by fishing in an artificial pond. In 2010 I would just catch cave lobster in the first underground cavern.

That's the one, yes.  Although if you're doing this on an existing fortress you'll have to change the copy of material_template_default.txt in the save folder for that fortress.  Changing the file in the raw folder will only affect new fortresses otherwise.

You can change it, or you can just add the [SHELL] tag without removing [HORN] so that material will count as both horn and shell.  I think this will only affect horn from animals butchered after you make the change, but I'm not sure of that.

Awesome. Thanks mate. Yes I did have to kill another puppy to get magic boneshells. But now my legendary fighter is content. And yes, Foehamster, I did discover that the underground caverns let me assign a fishing zone. But it's pretty dangerous down there. I have had ten forgotten beasts turn up already, so I have had to wall myself in/.

Oh the bloody irony. I dug a single hole in my wall so that I could get to the underwater lake for shells for my legendary fighter. A Forgotten Beast sneaked in super quickly. Guess who was the first military guy on the scene ?? Of course my legenday fighter that wanted the shells in the first place. With no weapons or armour of any kind. And of course he has got poisoned or something.

On the positive side, some forgotten beasts have shells.  Or other interesting materials - I added the [shell] tag to feather so I could use a pile of Forgotten Beast feathers from a giant chickadee monster for decoration.
