I've done a pretty good search of these boards, the wiki and even the in-game manual , but I can't find much info on the actual interface.
I'm on my first fortress and I'm doing okay thanks to researching this strange beast of a game for a month before actually diving in. As much as that lurking gave me a good idea of the concepts in DF and a vague starting strategy, I'm completely confounded by some of the quirks of the interface.

I have a 'C' and an 'S' on the left-hand border. What does it mean?

Some of my dwarves flash. Their names flash, and their graphics flash with a blue tinge. What does it mean?

The 'C', 'S' and so forth are just reminders that you have a message in your report log... it might refer to a combat ("The Fox has started fighting!"), or practice sparring, or other things. Press 'r' to check the report log.

Flashing Dwarves is good... it means that those Dwarves have reached Legendary status, and will perform far better than the average rock-head.
