Are Nobles broken in 31.12?
« on: August 09, 2010, 01:56:46 am »

I'm up to 80 Dwarves, and still haven't received any Nobles... not even a Dungeon Master. Has this functionality been broken by one of the updates?

Nobles in 31.x work differently than before. Instead of a bunch of immigrants, your trade liaison will offer you the chance to appoint one of your own dwarves as the next baron.

This happens when you've more than 20 dwarves in total and when your dwarves have produced a certain amount of certain goods. That list eludes me by now, but I think it was something like "20 gems cut, 20 crafts/toys produced, 20 pieces of masonry made, 20 pieces of metal crafting, 20 food/drink, 20 other".

In my limited experience, the baron will still perform any tasks he had enabled when he got promoted, but his consort will from then on only sit around in their apartment and stop doing any of their previous duties. The consort didn't make any demands or mandates though.

They will get promoted to counts after some more progress or production has been made, and that happens automatically. I didn't have a fortress progressing further down that lane yet.

This means that if your civilization is dead and you've never seen a liaison or a caravan, then you won't get any nobles.

Anyway, pick out a dwarf with an agreeable set of preferences and likes and give him a name that you can keep in mind, if you think that the liaison might come up with the idea to make your fortress into a barony at some point. That's because you can't check out their preferences on the selection screen when you're asked for your recommendation.

To avoid the fact that the consort thinks that he doesn't have to work anymore, I'd also suggest that you pick a single for that promotion.

I started my game in 31.11, and now playing in 31.12, and I get no offers for a baron yet. Does having a baron have any advantage? And what about the dungeon master?

The DM lets you tame more types of creatures, the Baron is useless and the Consort is the Baron's sex toy.

I haven't seen a DM in 31.x yet, so you'd do good by changing all [PET_EXOTIC] tags into [PET], me thinks.

I had the liaison receive my recommendation for a baron... it was accepted... but he met with an unfortunate accident after the third time he demanded materials I don't have on my map (some tin alloy). After that, I had only a mayor until the Queen arrived... by herself. No DM, tax collector, hammerer, or consort, and I skipped county and duchy entirely.

Having the queen is nice. She never makes demands and she is a hard worker. She was busy making potash at the ashery just yesterday! (Cinderella grown up?)

I promoted one of my own, now a count. likes mittens and grates.

did enough work to become the capitol, and the instant the king shows up, he dies of old age. convenient.

so now i have a Mountainhome status, and only the baron and mayor to worry about.

have played DF since old version, and have NEVER gotten a Dungeon master. I edit raws instead, for my horde of war bears.

a memorable fort once had a tigerwoman mayor- best mayor ever.

DM are still messed up, you won't get one.  I think nobles in general are also a little screwed up, but it's a Good Bug because your fort doesn't get dozens and dozens of totally useless nobles wandering in demanding stuff.

I don't understand, though that is about right with anything DF related.
I just hope he dies the same death that all dwarfs deserve: liver disease.
