Unhappy soldiers
« on: August 09, 2010, 06:36:40 am »

Some of my military dwarfs always become unhappy after I cancel the squad's orders. Usually they get over it pretty quickly but I'm worried about having an armor-clad steel battle axe-holding starting a tantrum. That would be bad.

So what do I do? I have an idea that the scheduling options hold the answer but I don't really understand how to work them.

I form pairs of squads, and have them train or patrol on alternate months, so that each squad has every second month off-duty.

But do you manually turn on/off an alert every month or what? This is the part that I think can be automated but I dunno how.

No, I put them on schedules where they have every second month with "No Orders".

I only post them (using the 's' key) for short periods, during emergencies.

Oh so that's what that page does! Awesome. By chance do you know what happens if the minimum number of dwarfs specified is more than are actually in the squad?

I keep the maximum to 10 always and have no problems, no matter how many dwarves are actually in the squad.
Also i keep them training all the time and they are all at least content.
Maybe the switch on/off duty generates bad feelings ?

Agreed... that number should be left at ten, even if your squad size is fewer than that.

Not a problem unless they get other sources of bad thoughts... such as "Exposed to the sun recently", "bad smell" or "a friend died recently". Unfortunately all of those are occupational hazards for soldiers. Giving them regular time off eliminates one source of unhappy thoughts.

Keeping training at 10 gives them the "Was depressed/engraged etc from long pantrol duty lately" negative thought which is bad. Keep the minimum to 7/10 or so and keep em training year round. They will take breaks on their own.

The second big thing is make sure that every dwarf you put into the military has a profession and is not a peasant. Otherwise they get a negative though like "Was annoyed at being relieved from duty lately" or something similar every time they de-activate from the military.

I keep my squads training full time at 8/10 minimum.  I make sure no peasants are drafted into the military.  I keep them all happy by making sure their barracks and quarters are full of fine quality goods and everything is smooth and engraved and that they have quick access to good food and drink.

I gave my dorfs a 3x3 smoothed room with engraved walls to offset the 11 month training schedule.
