quick question from a noob

is it possible to throw prisoners in with other, violently insane prisoners as a means of execution?

yep, (b)uild the (j)cages in the room to fight in and link both of them to an external lever. seal it off and pull said lever. build cage traps just outside the exist if they don't bother fighting each other

ive read that theres things like pitfall traps in this game, would it be possible for me to have a cell with one or more insane dwarves/wolves/goblins/whatever in it, and then drop prisoners from a higher level through a trap door into said cell from such a height that it wounds but doesnt kill them and theyre finished off by the monsters/prisoners?

not really, though you can sett up a 2 story room with a scafolding in it like so:

when the cage is placed in and opened, wait until the captive wanders onto the bridge and drop him/her/it in. just make sure said captives aren't building destroyers. also note that in the circumstance of captives that won't fight, install some upright spears/pikes and link them to a lever, or have the holding area be another drawbridge that drops the whole room down many, many z levels.
