contaminant spread in the snow
« on: August 01, 2010, 04:49:59 pm »

I have forgotten beast extract over the majority of the surface of my map.  The FB never made it up there -- the likeliest source is that the soldiers who killed it were themselves later killed at the surface.  But that doesn't explain how it's spread all over the place.  Do contaminants spread in the snow?

(It is, of course, rather a bug that there should be quite so many "pools" of the stuff on the surface -- the amount up there would have required quite a hauling operation if not for spontaneous generation of contaminants.)

Contaminants are just tuned wrongly at the moment. They can replicate over and over such that a thimble full of raccoon blood can get smeared all over existence. Some have had success fixing this with DFHack (which can "clean the entire map") but as for legit play, I believe the only hope you've got is to avoid creating any.

* Don't let anything get struck down in combat anywhere. (This creates blood, ichor, and vomit contaminants)
* Avoid causing collapses. (They create powder and pebble contaminants)
* Snow seems to be safe; it will get tracked everywhere but it melts\evaporates at an acceptable pace.
* Wherever your dwarves go to clean their bodies will get contaminated with whatever got them dirt. Set up a system to rinse this area clean with water flows periodically.

IIRC, grates over open space will clean your dwarves' feet

I can confirm for a fact that this is not true in DF2010.  Dwarves track pools of blood across grates over open space as if they were floor.  I use dfcleanmap regularly in my fortress, but that only cleans blood off the map, not off creatures, so the blood just ends up getting redeposited pretty quickly.

Yeah, this is pretty severe.  After a reclaim, all the contaminants are cleaned off and sieges stick around as friendlies, but the forgotten beasts end up outside.  Hilarity ensues.

Aha, I see someone else has also noticed it being particularly bad in snow.

It's grates by your well that help. When they wash themselves at the well it gets on the floor, but if instead the well is surrounded by grates, it won't get on the floor and won't be tracked around by the next person who goes to wash up.

Greiger's is actually correct...  sadly enough.  The emotional circumstance processor is still turned on, with a randomly rolled up personality, but they can't express themselves or take control...  they can only cry.

Oh, clever.  Doesn't help the stuff outside, but my next fort will have this.

My current fort is going to get abandoned a third time because of the contaminants issue.  It's a cursed fortress!

There's something in DF hack that cleans up all contaminants, if it's getting really ludicrous.
