Migrant skills ? Random
« on: August 09, 2010, 04:56:30 pm »

Anybody know this ? Are the skills that the migrants have, linked to anything, or are they randomly given. I am wondering whether more profitable or prolific trading has any impact on the quality of the migrants that arrive.

I have always thought they were random.  I've never had any reason to think otherwise.  Anyone else out there have any additional information?

Immigrant skills are totally random (as in you won't get them based on anything you do), but all their skills will be related at least. And 90% of the time they're the most useless sets of profession skills.

I have often felt that the migrants were filling in weak spots in my roster, ending with the medical professionals, and aiming for 200 total.  When I reduced the population limit to less than 200, I don't get as even a distribution.  I believe it also tries to cycle through religions and balance the genders.  I don't have any statistics to back this up.  It is just my impression.

I figured it was somehow affected by the work being done in the fort.  I dont make cloth or glass and I dont see many clothiers, after the armor production gets going in year 2, I always seem to get a few armorsmiths, ditto with weaponsmiths next migrant dump.

I also seem to get alot more stonecrafters than any other type of craftsdwarf.  I make big piles of stone crap early on, but stuff all other crafts.

And soapmakers just turn up for the hell of it.
