so my real question is: do i have to search manually over each engraved square in my fortress to find the masterful Heroic Pine? i'm just curious as to what it is now.

He actually engraved a picture of himself, not of another dwarf. Logemishak is his dwarven name, meaning Roomslapped.

And yes, you will need to search manually.

It's better than when they somehow know exactly what iguana monsters are, what they're capable of, and what they've done to their civilization.
